Matthews Cremation, a division of Matthews International Corporation (NASDAQ:MATW), is the global leader in cremator sales, emission filtration, parts/supplies, memorial products, service and repair. Meeting world standards such as Underwriters Laboratory (UL), Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and European Conformity (CE), the leadership of Matthews Cremation extends to "Cremation Green" technology aimed at environmentally-driven solutions.
“Today, we live in a world that encourages us to protect and preserve our natural resources and lower our carbon footprints by reducing greenhouse gases,” says Steven P. Schaal, Matthews Cremation President, North American Region. “Bio Cremation from Matthews gives individuals and families another choice at the end of life’s journey—allowing them to honor a legacy created on earth with a final gesture to preserve it.”
Matthews Cremation announces the launch of its Bio Cremation™ technology to offer families an environmentally focused end of life cremation option. Bio Cremation, also known as Alkali Hydrolysis, replaces the use of flame with the use of water. The sterile Bio Cremation process prevents the release of emissions (carbon monoxide, particulates, mercury) into the atmosphere and helps protect the earth’s natural resources. This water-based technology provides a gentle, clean cremation process that preserves the dignity of the deceased while reducing carbon emissions by over 75%.
The human body is placed into a specially designed cremation chamber where water is added, heated and gently circulated over the body, initiating the cremation process. The end results are bones that are processed and returned to the family in an urn for memorialization. Alkali Hydrolysis is a proven technology, but only recently introduced into funeral service as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional flame cremation. Alkali Hydrolysis uses 95% water and 5% potassium hydroxide (KOH). KOH is an alkali (not acid), inorganic compound that is used in numerous health and beauty cosmetics, soft soaps and cleaning supplies you would commonly find at home.
